AI Features Setup

Configure your OpenAI API key to unlock AI-powered features

Overview

BetterDating's AI features analyze your connections, meetings, and preferences to provide personalized insights. All AI features are powered by OpenAI and require you to supply your own API key — your data is sent directly from BetterDating to OpenAI using your key.

Your API key is encrypted and stored securely. BetterDating only sends the minimum data needed for each AI feature. OpenAI API usage is billed directly to your OpenAI account.

Step 1 — Get an OpenAI API Key

  1. Go to platform.openai.com/api-keys
  2. Sign in to your OpenAI account (or create one)
  3. Click Create new secret key
  4. Give the key a name (e.g., "BetterDating") and click Create secret key
  5. Copy the key immediately — it starts with sk- and is shown only once

If you do not have an OpenAI account, you can create one for free at platform.openai.com. You will need to add a payment method to your OpenAI account before API calls can be made.

Step 2 — Add the Key to BetterDating

  1. Log in to your BetterDating account
  2. Go to Settings › AI Integration
  3. Paste your OpenAI API key into the field
  4. Click Save API Key
  5. Optionally, click Test Key to verify the key is valid and working

Once saved, AI features will become available across BetterDating. You can update or remove the key at any time from the same settings page.

Available AI Features

Compatibility Analysis

Get a detailed compatibility assessment between you and a connection. The analysis covers personality compatibility, lifestyle alignment, communication style, long-term potential, potential challenges, and specific recommendations. Each analysis includes a compatibility score from 1–100.

Chat Topics

Generate three personalized conversation topics for a date based on a connection's profile and interests. Designed to spark meaningful, engaging conversations rather than small talk.

Venue Recommendations

Receive AI-generated suggestions for date locations tailored to a connection's interests, personality, and your location. Includes specific reasons why each venue would be a good match and tips for planning a great date.

Preferences Analysis

Analyze patterns across all your connections to identify what characteristics, traits, and backgrounds you tend to be most interested in. Includes actionable insights and recommendations for future connections based on your actual dating data.

Compatibility Questions

Generate a set of 10 personalized compatibility questions — 2 per category — based on your self-assessment profile. Categories cover core values, communication style, life goals, daily habits, and personal boundaries. Use these questions to quickly assess alignment with potential partners.

Managing Your API Key

From Settings › AI Integration you can:

  • Test the key — verify your key is valid and the connection to OpenAI is working
  • Update the key — replace the stored key with a new one
  • Remove the key — immediately disables all AI features; the key is deleted from BetterDating's storage

If you remove your API key, your existing connection data and analysis results are preserved. Re-adding a key re-enables all AI features.
